ENG 100 Assignment #3: Film-Based Argument Draft #2 Together We Can Build a Better Place Dictionary.com defines “illegal immigrants as people who enter the U.S. without an entry or immigration visa, especially a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson.” Some Americans feel threatened by immigrants because they’re seen stealing jobs, not paying taxes, violating the law by not going through the right process to be in the United States. “Cutting ourselves off from the world is a dangerous thing. Immigrants bring with them practices and cultural knowledge from their homelands, so that these ideas can be integrated into the new country they call home. Diversity can strengthen a population and helps us grow as a nation” (Kelly). Illegal immigrants and refugees should be allowed in the United states because they help build our economy, makes us less globally detached from other countries, and it gives us a glimpse of the world's perspective on America. Shirey wrote in the immigrationtounitedstates.com states “the first immigrants to settle in what is now the United States were the ancient ancestors of modern Native Americans. During the seventeenth century, the first wave of European colonists began arriving. Most of them came from England and northern Europe. This wave peaked shortly before the American Revolution of 1776-1783. The second wave lasted about fifty years, through the mid-nineteenth century, and brought mostly Irish and Germans to the United States. That period was followed by the third wave, which lasted about forty years and brought in millions of Asians and southern and eastern Europeans. The numbers are still climbing, without immigrants we the U.S. could be in much more debt. People don’t realize that immigrants are really helping out. People from all around the world want to come to America for many different reasons whether it’s coming to find the American Dream, Escaping war, natural disaster, or to start fresh for a better life. These people aren’t called illegal immigrants they call them refugees. Dictionary.com defines “refugee as a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.” Igielnik and krogstad stated in their article “Modern waves of refugees arriving in the U.S. reached their peak in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter signed the U.S. Refugee Act. The law established the Office of Refugee Resettlement, raised overall refugee quotas and provided a provision to deal with special humanitarian concerns. This was largely in response to the massive waves of refugees coming to the U.S. in the 1970s from Vietnam and Cambodia. In fact, more than 200,000 immigrants, largely from Southeast Asia, were given refugee status by the U.S. the year the Refugee Act was signed into law.” The Refugee act was created to provide a permanent and standardized procedure to be admitted into the United States. My mother and father are considered refugees back when they were living in Laos the United States was going to war with Vietnam but the war went beyond the borders of Vietnam. The war expanded to Laos and Cambodia. My parents barely escaped and made their way to the United States and got their citizenship. I’m thankful they made it out or I wouldn’t be here today. My mother tells me the story of how they escaped almost abandoning my brother leaving him by a tree just in case they were captured running from soldiers. I couldn’t even imagine how frightened and terrified they were running for their lives. Imagine the world without immigrants and refugees. Our economy would drop and we’d be in a major deficit. The world would be isolated and we wouldn’t get the chance to connect with other people from other countries. People all around the world would think that we are racist. Instead of becoming friends they would think of us as enemies. Everyone deserves a chance to try and better their lives they wanted to escape the nightmare for a better future. You can’t judge anyone if you don’t know what’s going on. Imagine if you were in their position. Would you be able to see yourself in a world where immigrants and refugees are being Discriminated, treated with Injustice, and Inequality. ENG 100 Assignment #1 Hiraeth Draft 3 The Perfect Christmas Just like any ordinary kid one of your favorite holiday is Christmas. Christmas is a holiday where you spend time with your family exchanging gifts. The fairy tales of Santa Claus coming down the chimney at night dropping off present if you had been a good kid that year. It all began on 133 Overhill Rd, me and my family had just moved out Philadelphia and into Upper Darby a week before Christmas. Our new house was not as big as our first house but it was in a way better area. The two story twin home with an indoor porch was cool and I had the only room with a balcony. The wooden floor was as smooth as a baby’s butt. The kids on the block were very nice and playful. Everyone was getting ready to celebrate Christmas as you can see the decorations piling up out front of peoples houses. A couple of days passes by my brothers and I tried everything we could to help our parents, we wanted our first Christmas in our new house to be amazing. Christmas was approaching and there was still no tree or presents. The night before Christmas I went to sleep early because I figured we were not going to celebrate Christmas this year. Morning has arrived and it's Christmas day I see bright lights as I walked out of my room I didn't pay no mind to it, just thought someone was watching TV. As I walked down the stairs I spot a lit up Christmas tree with presents underneath them. Then I looked to the right to see my mom and dad passed out on the couch, guessing they had been up all night setting up while my brothers and I were asleep. We gathered around the tree and exchanged gifts. I was the youngest so I got to open my gifts first, as I ripped off the snowman wrapping paper I was excited to receive my favorite superhero toy the black and white Power Ranger. My brother Tip was up next he unwrapped his present and it was a nice size box I knew he had a big gift. He opened his box and there was another box my parents were messing with him, making work for his Christmas gift. When he finally got it open it was a remote control motorcycle that he was able to drive around on our hardwood floor. My oldest brother was a little too old for toys. My parents usually gets him clothes or gift cards but this year they got him the shoes that he always wanted! You could see the excitement and joy on our faces. My parents made it possible with everything going on. The best Christmas ever! Thinking that Christmas was gonna be the same every year, I thought wrong. My life was slowly falling apart we were on the verge of getting evicted. My oldest brother had got into some trouble with the police and was sentenced to ten to fifth-teen years in prison for trying to keep a roof over our head. Christmas would not be the same without him. As the years go by it was hard not having my brother there for Christmas but we visited him to make sure that he wasn't left out. I couldn't imagine the pain he was in being locked behind bars year after year waiting for another chance at freedom. In 2007 I received the worst news of my life. My second oldest brother was killed in a motorcycle accident after a car had cut him off coming off a side block. Our hearts were heavy and the pain was unbearable. All Christmases wasn't like it used to be, we barely enjoyed ourselves, and was not as happy as we should be. It was tough not having my brothers around for Christmas it felt as if apart of our happiness had died. We knew we had to be happy for Christmas, my brother would've never wanted us to feel this way because of him instead of mourning, we celebrated because that's what he would've wanted. In 2013 just when I thought things couldn't get any worse my dad was getting ill we didn't know what was wrong with him. We took him to the doctor to get him checked out and received news that he was sick with lung cancer. My father got lung cancer from working heating and air conditioning and never work a mask so the insulation dust got into his body. As the days past my dad was getting sicker and sicker everything was different. He wasn't the same and I knew I had to spend every minute of the day with him. January 14 2011 I was sitting right next to dad in hospice when he had lost his life to cancer. One minute we are watching Transformers the movie the next minute he’s not breathing. The pain and suffering is over and Buddha had plans for him. My mother and I were lost, we didn't know what to do or expect knowing that this Christmas it was just gonna be me and her. Christmas wasn't so bad that year we visited my brother and exchanged gifts. I would do anything to go back and relive that perfect Christmas but cannot due to the circumstances that happen over the years. I wish it was just a dream and that I could wake up from this nightmare. Things started to get better my brother recently got out of prison in April of 2016 the system gave my family hope. They gave my brother another chance at freedom. After being locked behind bars for over a decade my mom cried tears of joy to finally have her son back it made me happy to see her like that. Christmas this year was gonna be better! We celebrated a little differently we had a nice size tree and tried to light it up like the stars in the sky. We put pictures of my dad and brother around the tree. The good old feeling of happiness, being able to enjoy Christmas once again. Life can be very tough unexpected things can happen but just know that you will always find light and the end of the tunnel. With everything that has happened we are grateful for everything. We as a family didn't give up when times got rough instead we stuck by each other and help go through this process together. Better Days are ahead and we have many more memories to make our Christmas special again. Cherish every moment because tomorrow is never promised. As a kid I always wanted to go to Disney World but my parents never had the money. We had just enough to live and maintain. I was jealous of hearing other kids stories at school of how magical and fun they have had while on vacation. When I got older I started to realize that you only get one life to live so why not turn your dreams into reality. May 25th 2017 I will finally get the chance to take a trip to the infamous Disney World! I'm super excited I didn't want to look like a creep going alone so I decided to bring my God Daughter Zoey! She is only two years old but I know for sure that she will have an amazing time! All she says now "can't Wait to see Minnie, Elsa, and Olaf." My god daughter means the world to me and I wanna do things with her that I never got the chance to experience when I was younger. I wanna give her all the nice toys I never got as a kid. Its truly a blessing to see her smile! All my hard work is finally paying off! ill be sure to post pictures as soon as we get back from vacation! For sometime now my boy always wanted to start this project to help out the homeless and hopeless people in our city. Recently he has started his own charity called Armed With Hope. Armed With Hope is a charity run by my friends who go out into the city and makes food for the homeless. They spend hours and hours out there handing out food and sitting down with some people and get to know their life stories and how they got into the position that their in if they feel comfortable sharing. They made HOPE T-Shirts and sells them for twenty dollars a piece and the money goes to the Homeless Charites. They even spoke to people that are willing to help find housing for the people who want it. We never really know what people have been through or the rough situations that they were in. Some have an addiction and they try to find a recovery house for them. I believe in what their doing and I think its truly a blessing. People deserve a second chance at life and they don't want to unless they have the motivation to do so. Brandon was a good friend of my brother and always looked at me as a little brother. I went out there to show love and support. please excuse my language! Brandon and his opponent are both from Delaware county and the trash talking had begun as soon as they announced the fight! I already knew that my boy was ready for war! ENG 100 Assignment #1 Hiraeth Draft #2 It all Began in West Philadelphia 4099 Powelton Ave to be exact. This was the house that me and my family were living in when they came from Laos. A three story red brick house with a grey metal door. The red and grey porch was my favorite place to hang out. As you look around you can see that the windows were bolted with metal bars so that no one would be able to break in, I guess you can say I lived in a bad neighborhood. The people outside making loud noises getting drunk and fighting each other over drugs made us scared and mad but we couldn't do nothing about it. My family didn't come to America rich. We only had enough live and maintain that was the best we can do at that point. Christmas is coming and that was the only thing we were looking forward to. Laos New Year is this weekend at out Temple in Northeast Philadelphia. In the morning we pray from nine to eleven and receive blessings from the monk. After praying people like to donate money and food to the temple because they believe that it will bring them good karma. There are so many people from Delaware, New Jersey, and New York Attend Which makes it super packed. When you step outside there are many different tents where you can buy food, toys, and clothes. Lucky for me I don't have to pay for food because my mom has her own tent selling food so that's a good thing for me. Later on in the day everyone gathers to parade around the block as a celebration. My uncle who is in a band with his friends set their equipment up in the back of his truck playing live music as the parade follows them singing, dancing, and screaming! Once the parade is done everyone heads to the back and gets ready to watch the beauty pageant they host every New Year. After the pageant is over there is a talent show for anyone who wants to join which is always fun to watch. As you look around it's nothing but good times and good vibes. Everyone having the time of their life! In the episode Chef's Table: Francis Mallman. He describes to us what his childhood was like growing up. Mallman also tells his story on how he became a successful chef.
This episode was definitely a narrative mode because he gives good detail and observation to express his story. The places he cooks his food or how he cooks his food. The different views of the video definitely caught my attention and was interested to learn more. Mallman story connects to our hiraeth assignment because he tells us about his childhood and what motivated him to become a chef. Mallman arrived to Patagonia at the age of seven where his house was ruled by fire with brother and family. When he was eight he was invited to dinner with his parents outside under a tree. He describes it to be longing about a home that he can't return to. Mallman went to France to get a job with a 3 star chef at a restaurant. After making a dish, the customer was no pleased and told him it was really bad, which made him take a different approach. He basically had a growth mindset to become a better chef by mastering the way that he cooks. At the age of 19 he started his first restaurant. Mallman says "building a fire is like making love." Mallman uses cooking to express himself. Mallman states "that you to respect what you're cooking, a man with ideas accomplishes his dreams." He never cooks alone he uses maestranza which means the people around you helping. ENG 100 Assignment #3 FIlm-Based Argument Draft #1 A New Beginning In the film, Survivor, screenwriter Philip Shelby writes about Kate Abbott struggles with saving America from a terrorist attack. Abbott is a Foreign Service Officer that works for the U.S. Embassy in London. Abbotts job consist of analyzing many different people that try to enter the United States, making sure that they're not a threat to the U.S. One of her fellow co-workers Naomi Rosenbaum comes across a potential suspect and reports it to Abbott. Dr. Balan who is a General Practitioner from Romania that studies in Pharmaceutical gases for Vickers Pharmaceutical. Dr. Balan says that he is going to the United States for a medical conference but really is planning an attack on Time Square to avenge the death of his wife. Abbott quickly becomes a problem, Dr. Balan notifies Pavlou About Abbott and he hires a man name the Watchmaker to kill her. Abbott figures out that Dr. Balan is planning an attack on the U.S. with the Watchmaker and take matters into her own hands. After being framed for some crimes that she didn't commit, Abbott finds a way New York and saves millions of people from being killed by the gas bomb explosion. After finishing the film I thought to myself, should immigrants be allowed in the United States? Yes, I believe that they should be allowed in the U.S. because my parents were not born in the U.S., they traveled all the way from Laos to escape the war with Cambodia. My parents had two choices to make it was either stay become slaves or get killed or escape and start their new lives in America. They made the right choice which brought me here today. People from all around the world want to come to America for many different reasons whether it’s coming to find the American Dream, Escaping war, or to start fresh for a better life for them or their family! We shouldn't hate them for trying to better their lives, you never know what they have been through. Over the years immigrant population size has increased rapidly. Between 2000 and 2015 the nation’s 42.2 million immigrants is the highest number in ninety-four years. Why are immigrants being looked at differently? Imagine putting yourself in their shoes would you wanna be treated differently and unfair? The United States Of America does import and export trades with other countries from around the world. The country has to import mineral oil and iron ore on a large scale. Machinery, cotton yarns, toys, lubricants, steel, tea, sugar, coffee, and many more items would be traded. The country's export list includes food grains like wheat, corn, and soybean. Cars, computer, papers, and machine tools for different industries. If we deny their people in our country then how can they trust us to do business with them knowing that their people are not wanted or being treated equally in our country. Imagine the world without immigrants. The world would be so different, it would be so one sided and boring. We wouldn't be able to taste the amazing food from all around the world. The different types of religion, clothing, and many other things wouldn’t be here today. The knowledge that we are taught today wouldn't be the same, how will we know what historical events happened over the years if we don't learn from other people from around the world. They say you can learn something new everyday. Is this a world you would see yourself in? I believe that everyone deserves a chance.
