ENG 100 Assignment #3 FIlm-Based Argument Draft #1 A New Beginning In the film, Survivor, screenwriter Philip Shelby writes about Kate Abbott struggles with saving America from a terrorist attack. Abbott is a Foreign Service Officer that works for the U.S. Embassy in London. Abbotts job consist of analyzing many different people that try to enter the United States, making sure that they're not a threat to the U.S. One of her fellow co-workers Naomi Rosenbaum comes across a potential suspect and reports it to Abbott. Dr. Balan who is a General Practitioner from Romania that studies in Pharmaceutical gases for Vickers Pharmaceutical. Dr. Balan says that he is going to the United States for a medical conference but really is planning an attack on Time Square to avenge the death of his wife. Abbott quickly becomes a problem, Dr. Balan notifies Pavlou About Abbott and he hires a man name the Watchmaker to kill her. Abbott figures out that Dr. Balan is planning an attack on the U.S. with the Watchmaker and take matters into her own hands. After being framed for some crimes that she didn't commit, Abbott finds a way New York and saves millions of people from being killed by the gas bomb explosion. After finishing the film I thought to myself, should immigrants be allowed in the United States? Yes, I believe that they should be allowed in the U.S. because my parents were not born in the U.S., they traveled all the way from Laos to escape the war with Cambodia. My parents had two choices to make it was either stay become slaves or get killed or escape and start their new lives in America. They made the right choice which brought me here today. People from all around the world want to come to America for many different reasons whether it’s coming to find the American Dream, Escaping war, or to start fresh for a better life for them or their family! We shouldn't hate them for trying to better their lives, you never know what they have been through. Over the years immigrant population size has increased rapidly. Between 2000 and 2015 the nation’s 42.2 million immigrants is the highest number in ninety-four years. In 1848 at Seneca Falls the Declaration of Sentiments states "We hold these truths to be self-evident," they said, "that all men and women are created equal." if that is the case then why was there slavery? Why are immigrants being looked at differently? Imagine putting yourself in their shoes would you wanna be treated differently and unfair? The United States Of America does import and export trades with other countries from around the world. The country has to import mineral oil and iron ore on a large scale. Machinery, cotton yarns, toys, lubricants, steel, tea, sugar, coffee, and many more items would be traded. The country's export list includes food grains like wheat, corn, and soybean. Cars, computer, papers, and machine tools for different industries. If we deny their people in our country then how can they trust us to do business with them knowing that their people are not wanted or being treated equally in our country. Imagine the world without immigrants. The world would be so different, it would be so one sided and boring. We wouldn't be able to taste the amazing food from all around the world. The different types of religion, clothing, and many other things wouldn’t be here today. The knowledge that we are taught today wouldn't be the same, how will we know what historical events happened over the years if we don't learn from other people from around the world. They say you can learn something new everyday. Is this a world you would see yourself in? I believe that everyone deserves a chance. How can we change the world if we don't change ourselves. work cited cis.org/Immigrants-in-the-United-States en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_trade_of_the_United_States www.ushistory.org/DECLARATION/document/ This assignment wasn't so bad compared to the other ones we had this semester. I believe that this was a good approach because there was so many things you can write about the movie Survivor. As I complete my assignment alone the hardest part of my writing process was to summarize the movie without going overboard trying to explain it. I tried writing my assignment in my room Sunday evening but was distracted by the family gathering we were having at my house. The house was extremely loud and it was really hard for me to focus. My thought process was all over the place I was basically staring at a blank screen and couldn't write anything down in my notebook. So Monday morning I went up to Dccc even though I didn't have class I thought it would be best for me to focus without any interruption. After spending nearly 2 hours I completed the assignment and felt I made the right choice getting the work done and having a better mindset. The reason why I chose my topic was because I felt that it was the right approach for me. Try to summarize and ask a lot of questions about the movie. I adapted pretty well since I wasn't able to get the assignment done Sunday so I figured I do it at school where I can have a better focus. My six steps of the writing process
1) Always got to have snacks around you while writing! cant work on an empty stomach you wont be able to think right. 2) Turn your phone off! so that way your friends don't interrupt you while your working a simple text message is all it takes. 3) Make sure your TV is turned off! you wont be able to process your thoughts and can get sidetracked easily trying to multitask from school work and watching TV. 4) Organizing my thoughts before I just go ahead and an get into it with my ideas all over the place. 5) Be confident in myself and my writing. 6) Proof read my work so I can see the changes that I can make. has helped me out a lot I see a lot of improvement in my writing. I'm gonna stick with it because they say don't fix it if its not broken. When millions of people lives are in danger who will help you when everyone is against you or trying to kill you? Are you gonna risk your life to save others? Would you consider Kate Abbot a hero after risking her life to save the people? The purpose of this assignment is to figure out what you would have done if you were in the same position as Kate? Would you have turned yourself in or risk you life to clear your name? College students was the audience of this assignment. My main focused would be critical thinking how was Kate able to accomplish saving Time Square without being captured or killed. Are you brave enough to take on this challenge? MLA format would be the style for the assignment.
The movie we chose for this assignment was The survivor. The survivor is about a girl name Kate Abbot a foreign service officer in London working at the United States Embassy where she stop terrorist from entering the U.S. Abbot comes across a potential suspect named Dr. Balan who works for Vicker's Pharmaceutical which specializes in gases. When questioning Dr. Balan, Abbot superior Bill Talbot cuts in and questions Abbot about what she is doing and tells her to push it through and that he'll take care of the paper work. Abbot then goes to Vicker's Pharmaceutical to try to obtain documents on Dr. Balan But is denied because she doesn't have the right clearance for it. Vicker's Pharmaceutical sees that Abbot is a threat to what they are trying to accomplish so they hired a guy named The Watchmaker to Kill Kate Abbot. The Watchmaker makes a bomb and delivers it to the restaurant that Abbot and her team is eating at for Talbots birthday. Abbot ends up going across the street to get a gift for Talbot who hasn't arrived because he had to stay back and delete files. Boom they bomb goes off killing everyone except Abbot and Talbot. Abbot screams for help when the Watchmaker notices that she's not dead he tries to finish the job by shooting her but ends up failing and Abbot is now on the run. Abbot runs to the meet up spot where she sees Talbot and he stated "why couldn't you have left things alone Kate but now I have no choice" he tries to kill abbot but ends up shooting himself and lots of people are around and blames Abbot for the murder of Talbot. Sam Parker a guy that she works with said "we don't assume the worst from our best people and we don't sell them out on the first sign of trouble" meaning he is trying to find abbot and help her before everyone else does so they can get to the bottom of what really going on. Kate cant trust anyone but Sam so together they try to solve the problem until Sam gets hurt. Abbot takes matters into her own hands and figures out that they are going to New York to plan an attack on New Years. She gets to New York and sees Dr. Balan and the Watchmaker so she follows them into a building. The Watchmaker kills Dr. Balan and continues on with the mission until Abbot shows up and stops the Watchmaker from blowing up Time Square. Abbot fights with the watchmaker until he is hanging off the ledge and she stomped on his hands and he falls and dies and the bomb doesn't explode. Sam calls abbot after the crazy events that happened and said "Yeah, it is. Kate, there were over a million people out there tonight, and you saved them all."
