ENG 100 Assignment #3: Film-Based Argument Draft #2 Together We Can Build a Better Place Dictionary.com defines “illegal immigrants as people who enter the U.S. without an entry or immigration visa, especially a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson.” Some Americans feel threatened by immigrants because they’re seen stealing jobs, not paying taxes, violating the law by not going through the right process to be in the United States. “Cutting ourselves off from the world is a dangerous thing. Immigrants bring with them practices and cultural knowledge from their homelands, so that these ideas can be integrated into the new country they call home. Diversity can strengthen a population and helps us grow as a nation” (Kelly). Illegal immigrants and refugees should be allowed in the United states because they help build our economy, makes us less globally detached from other countries, and it gives us a glimpse of the world's perspective on America. Shirey wrote in the immigrationtounitedstates.com states “the first immigrants to settle in what is now the United States were the ancient ancestors of modern Native Americans. During the seventeenth century, the first wave of European colonists began arriving. Most of them came from England and northern Europe. This wave peaked shortly before the American Revolution of 1776-1783. The second wave lasted about fifty years, through the mid-nineteenth century, and brought mostly Irish and Germans to the United States. That period was followed by the third wave, which lasted about forty years and brought in millions of Asians and southern and eastern Europeans. Finally, after U.S. immigration law abolished quotas based on nationalities in 1965, the fourth major wave began. It has continued into the first decade of the twenty-first century and has been the largest immigration wave in U.S. history. The majority of immigrants it has brought into the United States have come from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean islands of the West Indies.” Why stop letting illegal immigrants in the United States if they were migrating to America since the seventeen hundreds. We the people should stay true our word and keep it going. If immigrants go through the right process to obtain citizenship and pay taxes just like everyone else I don’t have a problem with them being here. “immigrants are a Plus for the Economy. Immigrants and their children bring long-term economic benefits to the United States as a whole. Immigrants add about $10 billion each year to the U.S. economy (Arizaga).” Today’s Federal Debt for the U.S. is 19,846,238,291,542.59 (Chantrill). The numbers are still climbing, without immigrants we the U.S. could be in much more debt. People don’t realize that immigrants are really helping out. People from all around the world want to come to America for many different reasons whether it’s coming to find the American Dream, Escaping war, natural disaster, or to start fresh for a better life. These people aren’t called illegal immigrants they call them refugees. Dictionary.com defines “refugee as a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.” Igielnik and krogstad stated in their article “Modern waves of refugees arriving in the U.S. reached their peak in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter signed the U.S. Refugee Act. The law established the Office of Refugee Resettlement, raised overall refugee quotas and provided a provision to deal with special humanitarian concerns. This was largely in response to the massive waves of refugees coming to the U.S. in the 1970s from Vietnam and Cambodia. In fact, more than 200,000 immigrants, largely from Southeast Asia, were given refugee status by the U.S. the year the Refugee Act was signed into law.” The Refugee act was created to provide a permanent and standardized procedure to be admitted into the United States. My mother and father are considered refugees back when they were living in Laos the United States was going to war with Vietnam but the war went beyond the borders of Vietnam. The war expanded to Laos and Cambodia. My parents barely escaped and made their way to the United States and got their citizenship. I’m thankful they made it out or I wouldn’t be here today. My mother tells me the story of how they escaped almost abandoning my brother leaving him by a tree just in case they were captured running from soldiers. I couldn’t even imagine how frightened and terrified they were running for their lives. Imagine the world without immigrants and refugees. Our economy would drop and we’d be in a major deficit. The world would be isolated and we wouldn’t get the chance to connect with other people from other countries. People all around the world would think that we are racist. Instead of becoming friends they would think of us as enemies. Everyone deserves a chance to try and better their lives they wanted to escape the nightmare for a better future. You can’t judge anyone if you don’t know what’s going on. Imagine if you were in their position. Would you be able to see yourself in a world where immigrants and refugees are being Discriminated, treated with Injustice, and Inequality.
