This assignment wasn't so bad compared to the other ones we had this semester. I believe that this was a good approach because there was so many things you can write about the movie Survivor. As I complete my assignment alone the hardest part of my writing process was to summarize the movie without going overboard trying to explain it. I tried writing my assignment in my room Sunday evening but was distracted by the family gathering we were having at my house. The house was extremely loud and it was really hard for me to focus. My thought process was all over the place I was basically staring at a blank screen and couldn't write anything down in my notebook. So Monday morning I went up to Dccc even though I didn't have class I thought it would be best for me to focus without any interruption. After spending nearly 2 hours I completed the assignment and felt I made the right choice getting the work done and having a better mindset. The reason why I chose my topic was because I felt that it was the right approach for me. Try to summarize and ask a lot of questions about the movie. I adapted pretty well since I wasn't able to get the assignment done Sunday so I figured I do it at school where I can have a better focus. My six steps of the writing process
1) Always got to have snacks around you while writing! cant work on an empty stomach you wont be able to think right. 2) Turn your phone off! so that way your friends don't interrupt you while your working a simple text message is all it takes. 3) Make sure your TV is turned off! you wont be able to process your thoughts and can get sidetracked easily trying to multitask from school work and watching TV. 4) Organizing my thoughts before I just go ahead and an get into it with my ideas all over the place. 5) Be confident in myself and my writing. 6) Proof read my work so I can see the changes that I can make. has helped me out a lot I see a lot of improvement in my writing. I'm gonna stick with it because they say don't fix it if its not broken.

When millions of people lives are in danger who will help you when everyone is against you or trying to kill you? Are you gonna risk your life to save others? Would you consider Kate Abbot a hero after risking her life to save the people? The purpose of this assignment is to figure out what you would have done if you were in the same position as Kate? Would you have turned yourself in or risk you life to clear your name? College students was the audience of this assignment. My main focused would be critical thinking how was Kate able to accomplish saving Time Square without being captured or killed. Are you brave enough to take on this challenge? MLA format would be the style for the assignment.
The movie we chose for this assignment was The survivor. The survivor is about a girl name Kate Abbot a foreign service officer in London working at the United States Embassy where she stop terrorist from entering the U.S. Abbot comes across a potential suspect named Dr. Balan who works for Vicker's Pharmaceutical which specializes in gases. When questioning Dr. Balan, Abbot superior Bill Talbot cuts in and questions Abbot about what she is doing and tells her to push it through and that he'll take care of the paper work. Abbot then goes to Vicker's Pharmaceutical to try to obtain documents on Dr. Balan But is denied because she doesn't have the right clearance for it. Vicker's Pharmaceutical sees that Abbot is a threat to what they are trying to accomplish so they hired a guy named The Watchmaker to Kill Kate Abbot. The Watchmaker makes a bomb and delivers it to the restaurant that Abbot and her team is eating at for Talbots birthday. Abbot ends up going across the street to get a gift for Talbot who hasn't arrived because he had to stay back and delete files. Boom they bomb goes off killing everyone except Abbot and Talbot. Abbot screams for help when the Watchmaker notices that she's not dead he tries to finish the job by shooting her but ends up failing and Abbot is now on the run. Abbot runs to the meet up spot where she sees Talbot and he stated "why couldn't you have left things alone Kate but now I have no choice" he tries to kill abbot but ends up shooting himself and lots of people are around and blames Abbot for the murder of Talbot. Sam Parker a guy that she works with said "we don't assume the worst from our best people and we don't sell them out on the first sign of trouble" meaning he is trying to find abbot and help her before everyone else does so they can get to the bottom of what really going on. Kate cant trust anyone but Sam so together they try to solve the problem until Sam gets hurt. Abbot takes matters into her own hands and figures out that they are going to New York to plan an attack on New Years. She gets to New York and sees Dr. Balan and the Watchmaker so she follows them into a building. The Watchmaker kills Dr. Balan and continues on with the mission until Abbot shows up and stops the Watchmaker from blowing up Time Square. Abbot fights with the watchmaker until he is hanging off the ledge and she stomped on his hands and he falls and dies and the bomb doesn't explode. Sam calls abbot after the crazy events that happened and said "Yeah, it is. Kate, there were over a million people out there tonight, and you saved them all."
The movie that I'm gonna choose for this assignment will the The Goonies! The Goonies was filmed back in 1985 where two brothers and their families are getting ready to move because developers decided that they wanted to build a golf course in their neighborhood. To stop the construction from tearing down their neighborhood they had to raise a lot of money for them to stop. While playing in the attic Mikey and his friends finds a famous pirate treasure map and decides to go looking for One Eye Willys treasure. While on the hunt for the treasure the goonies which Mikey and his friends calls themselves encounters a group of bad guys who wants to find the treasure to. While running from trying to be captured the gang runs into a cave where they have many booby traps set up. Eventually they stumble upon the great One Eye Willys treasure which lead the bad guys to them. The goonies were captured by the bad guys until their friend chunk and sloth came to the rescue! sloth was one of the bad guys who became friends with the goonies. The Goonies escaped but the treasure was gone so they were forced to sign the papers until they opened up Mikeys marble bag and found diamonds and gems. They ripped up the contract and the families were not forced to move! The Goonies saved their neighborhood!
1.) Were The Goonies considered hero's by saving their neighborhood? 2.) Did they work as a team in order to survive? 3.) Would you ever go on an adventure like this? www.imdb.com/title/tt0089218/?ref_=nv_sr_1 This academic mindset argument writing assignment was a lot harder than I expected. With no help needed it took me a little bit to find a good approach, I had so many ideas but didn't know where to start. Friday night I was feeling a bit off couldn't get in the groove of writing, I would type and delete for at least 30 minutes so I figured I would try tomorrow. Saturday morning was a lot better for me I was getting in the flow of my writing piece, everything was coming together. The most difficult part of the assignment was trying to put everything together while making sense at the same time. I would jump from this quote to that quote and it didn't make sense at all. I was starting to get frustrated but I knew that I couldn't give up now. So I tried harder to revise my work as I was typing so it'll make sense for my professor and classmates to read. I tried writing my essay Friday night in my room but was being distracted by my nieces asking me to play with them. My little rascals were running around screaming and playing, at that point I couldn't concentrate. The next morning I woke up and it was nice and quiet I figured I would get a head start on my work before I get distracted again! The two articles that we had to read gave me a lot of information that helped me finish this assignment. My six steps are really working out for me. I'm starting to see improvements with my writing and is less distracted by the things around me. Now I know what I have to do to remain focused. I always remind myself to be confident in myself and my writing!
Growing up my parents always told me to be good in school. They made sure I was getting my homework done and getting good grades but really they don't know how school is in America. School was getting tough, the work was getting harder and it mainly became stressful when I couldn't get things done on time or figure out the answer to a problem. My goal every year was to get A's or B's to make my parents proud with the fixed mindset that I can do it just like everyone else, but I was wrong Google says that a fixed mindset is when people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed trait. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They're wrong. Throughout high school I struggled a lot I wasn't getting the grades that I wanted and I was barely going to school. The other kids in my class were getting A's and I'm sitting there thinking to myself that I'm not smart enough or that I don't belong there or that I can't do it. I was basically giving up before I tried to put in effort. September 2016 I started my first semester of college I was nervous at first but I knew I had to take a different approach this time, that giving up wasn't an option. The mindset I had now was growth mindset. Google defines growth mindset to be when people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. Carol Dweck a psychology professor at the university of Stanford wrote an article called Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research and states "growth mindset" – the belief that the brain is like a muscle that can grow stronger through hard work." meaning you can become better at reading, writing, or whatever the subject maybe if you motivate yourself to work hard and not give up. There is a quote many people say "practice makes perfect" if you wanna become a better reader you're gonna read more. if you wanna become a better writer your gonna practice writing more. if you wanna become better at math you're gonna do more math problems. What I'm trying to get at is if you wanna become good or better at something you are gonna work your butt off until you reach your goal. Dweck theory states "it's harmful to tell your kids that they're smart because when they eventually do struggle in school, they might think they're not so smart after all. Ultimately, they become afraid of challenges and less resilient when faced with obstacles." students misjudge their abilities to be successful instead of finding another method they quit and try to take the easy way out. You can't build an empire overnight things like that take time. your academic skills are the same way you can't build on it overnight you got to give it time to develop. Alfie Kohn writes an article called The Perils of "Growth Mindset Education where he thinks otherwise, he believes that we should fix the system instead of trying to teach growth mindset to the kids. In a research study Kohn did in 2010 the results show that "When students whose self-worth hinges on their performance face the prospect of failure, it doesn't help for them to adopt a growth mindset. In fact, those who did so were even more likely to give themselves an excuse for screwing up- a strategy known as self-handicapping. As compared to those with the dreaded fixed mindset." Meaning that if students are so focused on school they may suffer rather than benefit from it." Meaning that if you keep telling your child good job even though he is wrong how will you ever know if he'll develop any skill. Parents these days shouldn't have to do that their child, if they get an answer wrong instead of telling them good job you should tell maybe we should try something different and see if that works. What happens if someone tells them that the answer is wrong, they might not be able to handle the truth and can break down their motivation. Be confident in yourself and your abilities to become better, challenge yourself until you fail so you can make room for improvements. You will not achieve your goals by having a fixed mindset, instead try having a growth mindset and see how far it will take you.
There are four different types of mindset which are belonging, growth mindset, self efficacy, and relevance/purpose. If I had to pick one mindset to describe myself it would be growth mindset. Growth mindset is important to me because it taught me to never give up when things got hard. Instead it helps build who you are as a person, it makes you stronger and keeps you wanting to strive for more. Anything is possible when you motivate and dedicate yourself to your dream. Back when I was in high school when things got frustrated or If I was stuck on an question I would've gave up and just said forget it. Now that I'm in college it's a whole different ball game, if I get frustrated or stuck I can't just quit I paid too much money to be here so now I have to find ways around it. Whether it's finding a new method that works for me or change the way I do things at this point giving up wasn't an option. There is a quote which most people say "practice makes perfect" if you wanna become a better reader you're gonna read more. if you wanna become a better writer your gonna practice writing more. if you wanna become better at math you're gonna do more math problems. What I'm trying to get at is if you wanna become good or better at something you are gonna work your ass off until you reach your goal and no one can ever tell you anything different once you dedicate yourself. I will continue to grow and learn many new things, but most importantly I will never give up! I can’t wait see what the future has in store for me because I am ready to make to best out of it.
After reading the article entitled Teachers, Parents Often Misuse Growth Mindset Research written by Carol Dweck, She explains the difference between fixed and growth mindset. Dweck stated "fixed mindsets" stop trying when confronted with a challenge because they've convinced themselves that they're not good at math or writing or whatever the subject is. She argues that adults can, instead, help foster a "growth mindset" – the belief that the brain is like a muscle that can grow stronger through hard work." letting readers know that you can achieve whatever you want by taking a different approach, by encouraging them that they can become a better writer or student with using growth mindset. Alfie Khon Wrote an article titled The Perils of "Growth Mindset Education, in a research study he did in 2010 shows results that "When students whose self-worth hinges on their performance face the prospect of failure, it doesn't help for them to adopt a growth mindset. In fact, those who did so were even more likely to give themselves an excuse for screwing up- a strategy known as self-handicapping. As compared to those with the dreaded fixed mindset." Meaning that if students are so focused on school they may suffer rather than benefit from it.
When you hear the word fixed mindset. what comes to your mind? If you don't know I will be happy to inform you that a fixed mindset is when some people believe that talent alone creates success-without effort. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. My parents always told me to work hard when I was in school, but I was hard headed and was ready to dropout. School wasn't really my thing I hated being there, when I was not doing good instead of trying harder I would just give up. In high school I was making a lot of money, more money then any high school student should ever make so at one point I decided not to go anymore. If it wasn't for my counselor and my mom I would've became a high school drop out. Instead I got my head back in the game and they encouraged me to finish school. I'm thankful that they didn't give up on me, they pushed me to the limits and motivated me. I could be in jail or dead if I kept doing the same thing I was doing, but now I know better and in college trying to get my degree in Computer Science. Growth mindset works differently people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment its the same thing as a muscle you can work on it and learn to develop from it. If I had to choose between fixed or growth mindset I would fall under growth mindset. I know I'm not the smartest person on the planet but if your willing to teach I'm willing to give it my all. Back then I would just give up if I was getting frustrated or not completing an assignment. Now I work harder and if it happens and I get frustrated I figure out a new strategy or change my work ethics. As I sit around the house I think to myself am I sure I want to make The Perfect Christmas my Hireath Project. I honestly think that this was the right choice for me because it is a time that I can't return to because of the situations that have happened over the years. The most difficult part of my writing was putting the pieces together trying to put what I remembered down on a piece of paper. My mind tends to wander or maybe I'm just not focusing enough. My mind takes a long time to process my thoughts but when it does hit me I get into the groove of writing. I know if I am confident in myself and my writing I can become a better writer everyday. The mistakes I make yesterday won't be the same mistakes I make today at this point you learn to grow. Instead of waiting for my thoughts to get processed I should just jump right in and tackle this writing assignment! I started my project Sunday evening in my room as I gather my thoughts everything hit me, I let my mind tell my story as I my fingers typed away. I chose this as my project to express my feelings, to let the audience feel the pain that I've been through over the years. A way to show a reflection of me and how was I affected by it, it made me become the person that I am today. My six steps help me a lot with my writing I proof read as I go and make the changes so that everything falls into place. Making changes isn't easy but it's worth the shot on becoming a better writer. Sometimes you gotta step out of your comfort zone to really get things going!

ENG 100 Assignment #1 Hiraeth Draft #1 There is a memory in my life that I wish I can go back to everyday that passes by. This memory plays in my head over and over again. This was the perfect Christmas I ever had in my life. A week before Christmas we had moved into our new house trying to get everything settled but time was whining down. My parents knew the house wasn't going to be ready but they didn't want to tell us that because they knew we would be upset and overwhelmed. As the day passes by Christmas was approaching there was still no tree and no presents, the house was nowhere close to being done. The night before Christmas I went to sleep early and upset not having a tree or presents, I was not feeling the Christmas spirit anymore. Morning has arrived and it is Christmas day I get up to get ready to remember there was no Christmas this year, I see bright lights as I walk out of my room with my head down but didn't pay no mind to it, just thought someone was watching TV. As I walked down the stairs I spot a lit up Christmas tree with a lot of present underneath them! Then I looked to my right to see my mom and dad passed out on the couch, guessing they had been up all night setting up while my brothers and I were asleep. We gathered around the tree and exchanged gifts, you could see the happiness and joy on our faces. I couldn't believe it, my parents made Christmas possible with everything that was going on. It was magical best the Christmas I ever had. Thinking that Christmas was gonna be the same every year, I thought wrong. My life was slowly falling apart, my oldest brother had got into some trouble with the police and was sentenced to ten to fifth-teen years in prison. Christmas would not be the same without him. As the years go by it was hard not having my brother there for Christmas but we visited him to make sure that he wasn't left out. Christmas 2007 was tragic, my second oldest brother had passed away earlier that year in September due to a motorcycle accident, our hearts were heavy and the pain was unbearable. Christmas wasn't like it used to be, we barely enjoyed ourselves, and was not as happy as we should be. It was tough not having my brothers around for Christmas it felt as if apart of our happiness had died. We knew we had to be happy for Christmas, my brother would've never wanted us to feel this way because of him instead of mourning, we celebrated because that's what he would've wanted. In 2013 my father was becoming really ill, we took him to the hospital to get him checked out. The doctor said that my father has lung cancer and that he only has a couple of months to live. My Mother and I were sick at heart, asking Buddha why, why our family? January 11th 2014 I was sitting right next to my father when he had lost his life to lung cancer. My mother and I were lost, we didn't know what to do or expect knowing that this Christmas it was just gonna be me and her. Christmas wasn't so bad that year we exchanged gifts and even visited my brother. I would do anything to go back and relive that perfect Christmas but cannot due to the circumstances that happen over the years. Wishing I was waking up with my family exchanging gifts and enjoying life like we should. I wish it was just a dream and that I could wake up from this nightmare. With everything that happen we are grateful for everything, even though they are not there to celebrate with us we know they are there in spirit watching over us. Cherish the moments while you can be cause tomorrow is never promised. |
